Lady Zhen

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Lady Zhen, the wife of Yuan Shao’s second son Yuan Xi, enters the narrative at the moment Cao Cao’s victory over the Yuan family reshapes the household’s political and personal fortunes. Cao Pi recognizes her beauty amid the defeated family, offers her protection, and soon marries her with his father’s approval; the episode turns the transfer of power into a new marriage alliance.

Identity and Background

Lady Zhen is identified by Lady Liu, Yuan Shao’s wife, as Yuan Xi’s wife. Her place in the story is defined through this connection to the Yuan family, whose authority is collapsing as Cao Cao advances. The evidence gives no further account of her earlier life or of her role in the family’s political affairs.

Encounter with Cao Pi

When Cao Pi encounters Lady Zhen, he asks who she is. Lady Liu names her, and the narrative immediately emphasizes her extraordinary beauty. The description presents her appearance through images of jade and a newly blooming flower, and characterizes her beauty as capable of overthrowing kingdoms. This is not merely a private observation: it precipitates the next turn in the scene, as Cao Pi offers to protect her.

Marriage and Political Context

Cao Pi’s offer is framed as protection for Lady Zhen and the household. Cao Cao accepts that she is an appropriate wife for his son, and the two marry shortly afterward. The account therefore places the marriage within a transfer of power: Lady Zhen moves from the family of Yuan Xi, whose fortunes have been defeated, into Cao Pi’s household, with Cao Cao’s consent.

The episode also contrasts this domestic settlement with Cao Cao’s public treatment of the conquered region. After taking Jizhou, he honors Yuan family tombs and shrines and exempts the people of Hebei from taxes for a year, citing their suffering in the wars. Lady Zhen’s marriage forms a personal counterpart to this broader accommodation of the former Yuan domain, though the narrative does not describe her own response or subsequent actions.

Narrative Role

Lady Zhen’s appearance is brief, and the account provides little access to her perspective beyond her identification as Yuan Xi’s wife. The scene instead makes her beauty the immediate cause of Cao Pi’s protective offer and their marriage. Through her, the narrative marks how the defeated Yuan household’s relationships are absorbed into the rising Cao family, while leaving her later character and influence unspecified.
